What rough beast ...

Well, nothing new to report here, except that we haven't gotten a  good night's sleep for the 275th consecutive time, and ...

Oh wait! We do have some news. Wyatt is crawling!

This all happened quickly. He had been creeping (doing the so-called "wounded commando", pulling himself along by his elbows) since before his surgery, but his progress was derailed by surgery and all the fiddling with his abdomen. He started creeping again about a week after surgery.

On Monday of last week, he started experimenting with propping one knee up under him while creeping.
On Thursday he started to crawl a few steps using both knees before dropping back down to the wounded commando.
On Friday he was crawling for real.
On Saturday he was crawling full speed, and starting to do the Downward Dog (butt straight up).
He is so proud of himself. He crawls a few steps and then stops to make sure that his progress has been noted and praised. I'd be proud too if I'd suddenly become mobile after a lifetime of immobility.
His great-aunt Ann predicts he'll be walking within 6 weeks.
We suspected he'd start crawling when he had motivation to do so, and he finally found motivation in the form of ... a 10-year-old cat toy. He loves the combo scratching pad/captive ball, and will crawl across the living room to get it. Never mind that he has a huge cache of plastic Fisher Price toys from various members of his loving family. It's the cat toy that he wants.

This reminds me of a story my mom told me about them spending several hundred dollars on Christmas presents for their 6 young children, only to find the kids playing with their broken crayons from a coffee can later on Christmas morning, new toys forgotten. You just can't predict what anyone will like, including babies.
